Ruth "Ruthie" Houser Obituary

Ruth A. “Ruthie” (Millar) Houser, 84, of New Oxford, passed Tuesday, May 23, 2023 at the WellSpan York Hospital from injuries sustained from an automobile accident. She was the wife of the late James L. Houser, her husband of 35 years, who passed on September 26, 1997.

Ruthie was born July 26, 1938, in New Chester, one of six children, Ruthie was the daughter of the late John Z. and Goldie Mae (Epley) Millar.

Ruthie was a 1956 graduate of New Oxford High School where she received many awards in home economics for her baking. In her early years, she was a waitress at the Lincoln Diner, Abbottstown, where she also enjoyed her time and many friends there.  In those days, she drove a blue and white 1957 Chevy.  Ruthie married James in 1962, and later bought their own farm from James’s parents. They worked together, building a life and a home to be proud of. They were both dairy farmers all their lives. Ruthie and James opened their home to many in need through the years. They raised two daughters, and a foster son, all while tending the many animals and working the fields. And even though they worked hard, and never had days off or took a vacation, Ruthie’s family believed it was a good life that revolved around the farm. After the death of James in 1997, with the help of her foster son, Bill, Ruthie never gave up, and had the strength to keep the farm going. Ruth was a lifelong member of St. John’s U.C.C. in New Chester, where she will always be remembered as a very sweet and kind lady. She will be greatly missed.

Ruth is survived by a daughter Melanie H. Cornman and her husband Greg of New Oxford, a foster son, Floyd W. “Bill” Lockman of New Oxford, five grandchildren, Seth Cornman, Caraline Cornman and Christine Cornman, Dylan Stultz and Alexandria Best, and her husband Matthew, a devoted and caring son-in-law, Jim Touloumes of Gettysburg, Three great grandchildren, I’lynd Stultz, twins Parker and Peyton Best, four sisters, Jean Ford of New Oxford, Dorie Dalasio of Bedford, Janet Reffner and her husband Bud of Greentown, and Gladys Millar of Biglerville, one brother, Johnny Millar of New Oxford, many nieces and nephews whom she loved dearly, and many others, not related,  that she considered family. She was predeceased by a daughter Connie A. Touloumes.

Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, May 30, 2023, at 11 AM at St. John’s U.C.C. New Chester, 2243 Hunterstown Hampton Rd. New Oxford, with Rev. Doug C. Hahn officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A visitation will be held on Tuesday, at the church, from 10 AM until the time of service. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to, the Go Fund Me page set up for “The Farm” https://gofund.me/989ee392, as that is what Ruthie would have wanted. She did love flowers, but the ones she loved grew in her own flower beds at the farm. Memories may be shared at www.feiserfuneralhome.com.
