Julia Taylor Hitchcock, 97, died Thursday, April 27, 2023, at The Brethren Home Community in New Oxford, PA. Her body was received by the Humanity Gifts Registry in Hershey, PA, for research and education.
Julia Beatrice Taylor was born on July 8, 1925 in Wilmington, DE, to J. Harry and Virginia (Lankford) Taylor. She was musically talented from a young age, performing in recitals with her father and as an actor with the Brandywiners at Longwood Gardens, PA.
Julia graduated from Oberlin Conservatory of Music, Oberlin, OH, then moved to Westminster, MD, as a music teacher. She married Fern R. Hitchcock, Jr., of Taneytown, MD on August 27, 1949 (deceased in 2007). After having five children, she taught vocal music at Western Maryland College (now McDaniel College) in Westminster MD. She gave numerous faculty recitals while there. Julia was a member of the choir at Westminster Church of the Brethren, the Carroll County Chorale, the National Association of Teachers of Singing, American Association of University Women, and Delta Kappa Gamma. Julia loved sewing and being a grandmother, and was known for her English smocking needlework.
Julia is predeceased by her husband Fern; her sister, Joyce Smith of FL; and her oldest daughter, Barbara Scott of CA. She is survived by daughter, Dorothy Keene of MA; daughter, Nancy Sweeny and her husband John of VA; daughter Sharon Hitchcock and husband John Apostolakis of France; son, John Hitchcock of VA; eight grandchildren; and eleven great grandchildren.
A memorial service will be held at the Nicarry Meeting House of the Brethren Home Community, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford, PA 17350, on Saturday, May 6, 2023, at 10 AM.
