Hedwig (Gast) Tweardy, fondly known to many as Heidi, 88, went to heaven on Wednesday, September 21, 2022. She was the wife of the late Amil P. Tweardy, her husband of 34 years, who passed November 18, 1990.
Hedwig was born October 8, 1933, in Trier, Germany, the daughter of the late Karl and Ella (Bataille) Gast.
Hedwig was an active member of Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church in Abbottstown since 1963. She received her Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in education from Millersville College and taught special education for many years, retiring in 1997. Hedwig loved gardening, arts, knitting, baking German Christmas cookies, classical music, time with friends, and especially time with her children, grandchildren, and her dear sister. Hedwig liked to stay busy, always with a new project, from making stained glass to watercolors to felted slippers, spending countless hours in her beautiful garden, and enjoying time at the beach. Hedwig was very generous and loved sharing her many talents and gifts, whether teaching or making beautiful gifts and works of art to share with family and friends, church bazaars, and local shops. Most of all, Hedwig shared her love and strength with her family and was loved dearly. She will be missed by all. Peace be with you.
Hedwig is survived by her children, George P. Tweardy and his wife Ann of East Berlin, PA, Milan P. Tweardy of Denver, NC, Claudia A. Serfass and her husband Gerald E. II of York, PA, Bettina L. Tweardy Riveros and her husband Victor Hugo of Newark, DE, and Karl P. Tweardy of Richmond, VA, a sister, Irmgard Rappert of Germany, 13 grandchildren, Nicholas, Neil, John, Alex, Connor, Christian, Marielle, Natalia, Sophia, Jack, Tayloe, Tristan, and Tylerson, a goddaughter Katrin Brincker of Germany, and many beloved nieces and nephews. Hedwig was predeceased by her daughter, Maria P. Tweardy of Wilmington, DE, and two brothers, Franz and Ernst Gast.
