William F. "Bill" Martin, 95, passed peacefully on Wednesday, September 21, 2016 at The Brethren Home Community, on what was his 70th wedding anniversary. He was the husband of Mary S. (Aaron) Martin, his wife of 68 years, who passed October 26, 2014.
Bill was born December 15, 1920 in Hagerstown, MD, the son of the late George D. and Edna M. (Wieseckel) Martin.
Bill was a graduate of St. Mary's High School, Hagerstown, and attended Hagerstown Business College. He served in World War II as a First Lieutenant with the First Engineer Combat Battalion, 1st Infantry Division in the European Theater. He saw action in North Africa, Sicily, Normandy, Northern France and Germany. He worked at Western Maryland Railroad in the car records office until 1954, and from 1954-1974, he worked at Commercial Machining Company in Conway, PA. Bill and Mary relocated from Sewickley to New Oxford, and along with his son, Stephen and his wife, Sandy, bought Martin's New Oxford Hardware in 1974, which Bill helped to operate for 42 years. He was a numbers guy ever since his first job at the railroad, and continued to handle the numbers and much more at the hardware store. During the last 3 years, he served as an advisor to the store. Bill loved getting together with his family, working in the garden, and anything related to cars. He enjoyed driving, detailing, and watching cars go around New Oxford's Center Square.
