William E. Dowling, 74, of New Oxford, passed peacefully Sunday, September 3, 2017, at his residence surrounded by his loving family. He was the husband of Lynn R. (Faugno) Dowling, his wife of 50 years.
William was born May 22, 1943, in Stamford, CT, the son of the late William J. and Helen M. (Kinsella) Dowling.
William Dowling was an award-winning photographer, drummer, and the only Licensed Gettysburg Battlefield Guide to ever receive an award for service by the National Parks Service. His new book "The Gettysburg Cyclorama: The Turning Point of the Civil War on Canvas", which prominently features his photography, is considered one of the finest works ever done on the subject. He was also a member of the American Legion Drum Corps in Greenwich, CT for 25 years, and the St. Peter's Drum Corps in Torrington, CT.
In addition to his wife Lynn, William is survived by two sons, William J. Dowling of New Oxford, and John J. Dowling and his wife Jeanette of Stamford, CT, a daughter, Erin M. DiNello and her husband Paul of Westminster, MD, five grandchildren; John Ryan Dowling, Lauren Dowling, Iris Dowling, Madison DiNello and Lily DiNello, and a sister, Patricia Schriefer of Stamford, CT. He was predeceased by a sister, Nancy Surhoff.
Following cremation, a memorial service will be held on Friday, September 8, 2017 at 7 PM at the Feiser Funeral Home, Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, with Deacon Steve Huet officiating. A visitation will be held at the funeral home on Friday from 5-9 PM. Additionally, a memorial service will be held on Wednesday, September 13, 2017, at 11 AM at St. John's Roman Catholic Church, 1986 Post Rd, Darien, CT, with Rev. Joseph Cervero officiating. Burial will follow in St. John's Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the ALS Foundation, 321 Norristown Rd, Ste 260, Ambler, PA 19002.
