Obituary

Shirley Jean Hoke Mummert passed away peacefully at home surrounded her loving family on January 19, 2026. She was born on August 10, 1936 in Abbottstown, Adams County, PA to the late Richard and Miriam Eisenhart Hoke. She was preceded in death by her beloved husband of 66 years, Wayne Mummert and her brother, Ronald Hoke.

In 1954 she graduated from East Berlin High School. During her younger years, she worked at Abbottstown Grain and Feed (now Hoke Mills), a business owned first by her father and later by her brother—a connection to family and community of which she was very proud.

Shirley cherished both her own family roots and those of Wayne, taking special pride in his family’s farm—a Bicentennial Farm that has been in the family since 1789 and was recently preserved through the Adams County Land Preservation Program. She loved learning the stories behind the farm and took joy in caring for its history and the heirlooms that connected generations, ensuring they would be remembered and valued for years to come.

A faithful member of Emmanuel United Church of Christ in Abbottstown for more than 65 years, Shirley was actively involved in church life and served the church in many capacities. She especially enjoyed helping with church dinners, soup and pie sales, and the annual Christmas Cookie Walk. Shirley was known for her kindness and generosity – she was always ready to help others in need with food, transportation or simply keeping someone company.

Shirley was deeply devoted to her family and immensely proud of them. She loved her children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and rarely missed an opportunity to attend her family’s activities and events. She also enjoyed traveling and took pride in having visited 46 states and six continents during her lifetime.

She is survived by her children: Keith Mummert (Joan); Karen Frey (David); Kelly Hollabaugh (Rodney); and Kristi Smith (Clinton/Boo). Her grandchildren include Lindsey Rocks (Andrew); Mark Mummert; Alexa Frey; Jennifer Hollabaugh; Kaylie Smith; Amanda Hollabaugh; and Brodie Smith; along with step-grandchildren Chad Hollabaugh (Amber) and Chris Hollabaugh (Colleen). She is also survived by her great-grandchildren Claire, Carter, and Colton Rocks, and step-great-granddaughter Breanna Platts. She is also survived by her sister-in-law Jeanne Hoke.

Funeral services will be held on Saturday January 24, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Emmanuel UCC., Center Square, Abbottstown with Rev. Barb Brenneman officiating. Burial will be in Mt. Olive Cemetery. Viewings will be held on Friday from 6-8 PM at Feiser Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, and on Saturday at the church from 10:00 AM to the time of the service.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the Wayne and Shirley Mummert Memorial Fund at the Adams County Library System.
