Ruth I. "Irene" (Chubb) Myers, 85, of East Berlin, passed away on Saturday, July 30, 2016, at the home of her daughter in Abbottstown, with both of her daughters by her side. She was the wife of the late H. Fred Myers who died in October of 1993, her husband of 43 years.
She was born December 10, 1930, in Snyder County, Pa., near Selingsgrove, the daughter of the late Charles Adam and Elizabeth (Aucker) Chubb. Irene was educated in a one-room school in Snyder County, prior to moving to East Berlin in 1942, where she attended and graduated from East Berlin H.S. in 1948. Irene attended Susquehanna University in 1948-49. She married the love her life and high school sweetheart, Fred, in 1950. They moved to their farm in 1953 where they had a dairy business and later cattle and crops. In 1963, Irene, with the help of her beloved Fred, was able to continue her education at Messiah College. She taught in Hamilton School in Harrisburg for a semester and one year at Paradise Elementary, before graduating from Penn State in 1969 with degrees in Secondary English and Elementary Education. In 1975, Irene earned a Master's degree in Guidance and Counseling from Shippensburg University. Irene put her degrees to good use in educating children at East Berlin Elementary School from 1968-89 where she also began the guidance counseling and teacher's aid programs at E.B. Elementary School. Irene loved teaching and had her dream fulfilled for 21 years, retiring in 1989. Irene had a love of nature, especially birds and flowers (she had a green thumb) and life on the farm. She was a talented poet. She was Poet Laureate in 1969 while at Penn State and was a member of the Pennsylvania Poetic Society, having had several poems published. Her love of teaching never stopped -- she was a tutor and mentor for many outside of the classroom. Irene taught Sunday School for 40 years at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church in East Berlin, served as Youth Leader and was on the Evangelism, Anniversary, Apple Dumpling and Missionary Support committees, council secretary, and member of the women's group (W.E.L.C.A.), a member of the E.B. Historical Society, Farm Women, Secretary of Washington Township, East Berlin Senior Center Board, E.B. Senior Center, Dover Band Boosters and East Berlin Library. She is survived by two daughters, Rochelle N. (Shelly) Livingston and her husband David of Abbottstown and Amie M. Trinca of Stuarts Draft, Va.; four granddaughters, Jasmine I. Livingston of Harrisburg, Ivy L. Livingston of Brooklyn, N.Y., Jessie B. Chittams and husband R.J. of Salisbury, Md. and Torri L. Render and husband Demitris of Candler, N.C.; two two great-granddaughters, Zora Chittams and Kennedy Render; and many friends, nieces and nephews. Irene was a second mother to many and grandma to many more than just her biological family, including Joe, Mary, Michael and Catherine (children of Dau and Lan Hoang), whose family became a part of her family in 1980. She was predeceased by four brothers, Rev. Clarence Chubb, Robert Chubb, Millard Chubb, and Charles Chubb; two sisters, Gladys Fahs and Mary Baker; and her beloved cat, Cutie.
Irene was happiest on the farm, working beside her beloved husband, Fred. She loved to entertain friends and family, often cooking huge meals for a house full of people. Irene and Fred opened their doors to many who needed a second home.
