Obituary

Richard Hall Hutchison, Jr., of New Oxford, PA, passed away at the age of 84 on May 26, 2026 at the Cross Keys Brethren home, surrounded by four generations of family.
Rick was born to a long line of Presbyterian theologians and ministers. His father, Richard Hall Hutchison, was a graduate of Princeton Theological Seminary, and the pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Lake Forest, Illinois. His mother, Anne (Armstrong) Hutchison, was the daughter of Rev. Dr. William Park Armstrong, a professor of New Testament at Princeton Theological Seminary, and granddaughter of Rev. Dr. George Tybout Purves, pastor of the First Presbyterian Church of Princeton and Fifth Avenue Presbyterian Church in Manhattan.

Rick was raised in Princeton, NJ, Albany, NY and Lake Forest, IL. After graduating from Lafayette College, he married Beverly Hawes (Bohus) and became an officer in the United States Army. Rick spent several years in service in Vietnam, and welcomed the arrival of his daughter Laura. He then was deployed to Frankfurt, Munich and Berlin, where he was a Vice Commodore of the American Yacht Club Berlin. In 1981, after his divorce, he returned stateside and was stationed in Maryland.

In 1982, Rick married June Faith Savanick (Werlwas) and settled in Annapolis, Maryland, becoming the step-father to Rob, Jeff, Mark and Mary Lynne. In the late 1980s, he retired from the Army as a lieutenant colonel and worked in the private sector. He became very active in Woods Memorial Church in Severna Park, Maryland, where he served as an Elder and a Stephen Minister. He and June were strong supporters of the non-profit Unbound, and travelled often to Guatemala to support its work. Rick also enjoyed flying small planes, hang-gliding, and bread baking. He was a generous, playful and devoted father and grandfather, and could always be counted on to listen patiently and calmly to children of any age.
Upon their retirements, June and Rick moved to Cross Keys community New Oxford, Pennsylvania in 2022. Rick got cancer shortly thereafter, limiting his ability to engage his new community as fully as he had hoped.

He is pre-deceased by his brother Stuart Hutchison. He is survived by his brother Jon Hutchison, of Ontario, Canada; beloved wife June Faith Savanick Werlwas Hutchison, of New Oxford, PA; children Laura Hutchison, Mark (Katie) Werlwas, Jeff (Lisa) Werlwas, Robert (Virginia), and Mary Lynne (Al); and grandchildren Matthew, Mihret, Katie (Chris), Junah, Ian (Claudia), Kevin (Andrea), Sean (Brena), Alexandra (Ethan), Nicholas, Victoria (Cole), Hope (Ryan), and Philip; and great-grandchildren Jamie, Liam, Morgan, Kelsey, and Kieran.

Relatives and friends are invited to attend Richard’s Memorial Service at Feiser Funeral & Cremation Care, 302 Linciln Way West, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, PA, on Saturday, June 6, 2026, at 3:00 p.m. The family will receive friends from 2:00 p.m. until the time of service.
