Peter Albert Byrne was born on July 5, 1945, in Huntington, New York, and peacefully joined the love of his life, Linda, in heaven on January 11, 2026. He was the son of Thomas and Murial (Mott) Byrne; brother of Thomas Byrne and Neil Byrne; and husband of Linda R. (Newell) Byrne for 45 years, all of whom preceded him in death.
He is survived by his daughter, Kim, and her husband, Chris Shallcross, of Aubrey, Texas; his son, Joseph, and wife, Brittany Byrne, of New Oxford, Pennsylvania; and three grandchildren, Caitlin Shallcross and her fiancé, Garrett Ramuchak, Liam Byrne, and Gavin Byrne.
Service to his community and loyalty were his life’s work. He chose to proudly serve in the United States Air Force as a fighter jet mechanic from 1964–1968 and served in the Vietnam War. He worked for Newsday, driving trucks to mass-distribute the morning newspaper for over 40 years, and retired in 2012. Lastly, he served as a volunteer fireman with the Halesite and Smithtown Fire Departments in New York for over 50 years. After retirement, he moved to Pennsylvania to be with family and loved taking his entire family to Disney on annual trips. As a part of the community in Pennsylvania, he was a member of the United Hook & Ladder, American Legion, and New Oxford Social & Athletic Club.
His greatest joys were his grandchildren. He traveled to Texas often, most recently to proudly see his granddaughter graduate. As a grandparent of the Byrne twin boys, he thoroughly enjoyed babysitting and an “end-of-shift beer” with his friend and comrade, Cindy Fetter. He attended many Mets games and was known as The Original Mets Fan. Some of his favorite pastimes included The Price Is Right, televised sports, family dinners, Disney trips, camping and mini golf with the Byrne boys, airplanes and space flight, and still reading Newsday on his iPad.
A viewing will be held on Thursday, January 15, 2026, from 6-8 PM, at Feiser Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford.
Pete will be laid to rest at Calverton National Cemetery, Eastern Long Island, New York. Welcome home, Staff Sergeant Byrne.
