IN LOVING MEMORY OF
Maurice L.
Bull
July 30, 1937 – May 7, 2024
Maurice L. Bull, 86, of Abbottstown, PA, departed this life on May 7, 2024. He was born on July 30, 1937, in Butler, Maryland, to Upton O. and Alice E. Stiffler Bull. He is survived by his wife, Patricia A. Simmons Bull. They were sweethearts at Hampstead High School and were married for over 69 years, having been united on October 30, 1954.
They are the loving parents of four children: D. Wayne Bull and wife, Kathy, of New Chester, Pennsylvania; Karen Bull Nott and husband, Donnie, of Manchester, Maryland; Dale L. Bull and wife, Lisa, of Hampstead, Maryland; and Raymond D. Bull and wife, Jan, of Bloomsburg, Pennsylvania.
In addition to his wife and children, Maurice is survived by 10 grandchildren, and 16 great grandchildren, with the 17th due to join the family in November, 2024. He is also survived by a brother, Robert Bull, and his wife, Sally, of Hanover, Pennsylvania.
Maurice worked 23 years for Dutterer's of Manchester, MD in meat cutting. He was the Manager of the original grocery store, was the Meat Department Manager of the new Dutterer's grocery store, and the Manager of Manufacturing in the Dutterer's Packing Plant which later became Doughtie's. He co-owned a service station with his brother in South Hanover. In 1978, Maurice and Patsy moved from their home in Manchester, Maryland, to New Chester, Pennsylvania, when they bought a meat processing and grocery store known as Bull's of New Chester which they operated for 23 years with their son, Wayne, and daughter-in-law, Kathy. During those years, they were blessed with many wonderful regular customers and community neighbors who were also cherished friends. In 2001, they retired and took up residence in Abbottstown.
During his entire life, Maurice had a passion for large toys with motors and wheels. He was a Charter Member of Hanover Rod & Kustom and served many years as President. That Club transformed a van into an ambulance for use at Lincoln Speedway. He next enjoyed running drag races on the front stretch at Lincoln. He then helped to start the first drag races at Thomasville Airport as an Officer of the South Penn Hot Rod Council which would later become U.S. 30 Dragway. He also worked a time at Mason Dixon Dragway and was involved with the opening of Capital Raceway. He had the pleasure of working the starting line and pushed the button on the very first "Christmas Tree" light. He worked three years at the Nationals in Indianapolis for the National Hot Rod Association.
He was the starter at the Mary Ann Furnace Paved Road Course Go-Kart Track which is now under water at Codorus State Park. He was then the Treasurer of the 116 Go-Kart Racing Club which ran races at the Happy Ramblers track.
During the time of all of these activities, there were always antique cars, show cars, or race cars in his garage or being driven on the road – always in a law-abiding manner, of course!
For 25 years, he enjoyed riding motorcycles – too many different ones to count - but many of them had odometers registering 10,000 miles a year as he and Patsy traveled throughout much of the United States.
Throughout the years, Maurice was also involved in various racing activities with his sons and very much enjoyed sharing his expertise and passion for motorsports with them. Their travels, successes, and sometimes mishaps, created memories which are very fondly cherished by the family.
As the involvement in motorsports began to lessen, Maurice and Patsy's interest in music events – particularly bluegrass - became a focus of their enthusiasm. They traveled near and far to attend performances. They also found great pleasure logging much time and many miles to enjoy their grandchildren's and great grandchildren's sporting events or to just meander through beautiful countryside, often making stops to enjoy a treat or experience along the way.
Maurice was a member and volunteer at the Eastern Museum of Motor Racing in York Springs, Pennsylvania, and a life member of the New Oxford Social Club.
He was predeceased by a baby sister, and a brother, Russell Bull.
