Obituary

Mary Catherine (Menchyk) Carbaugh, 98, entered God’s eternal care on Thursday, March 5, 2026, at Pleasant Acres Nursing & Rehabilitation in York.

Born October 15, 1927, in Butler, PA, she was the daughter of the late Demetrius and Catherine (Sisak) Menchyk. Mary was the loving wife to Francis A. "Slim" Carbaugh, Jr., until his death on January 8, 2006. They were married for over 50 years.

Mary spent many happy years with her husband and children living on a 13-acre property on Bon-Ox Rd, where she nurtured her soul and family through gardening and nature. She was a strong, resourceful women who met challenges head on. Always curious about the world, she consumed volumes of texts from newspapers and magazines to encyclopedias, expanding her mind and sharing what she learned with others. Mary loved to tell stories of her youth and she loved to sing as she did with both a choir and her family. With an associate's degree in fashion and merchandizing, she was fastidious in how she presented herself and made sure she always looked her best.

Mary’s religious and spiritual beliefs were always important to her. She spent a year as a Catholic novice before deciding to be a wife instead of a nun. But Mary never relinquished her faith. She was a member of Immaculate Conception Catholic Church, in New Oxford, until May 2005, when she joined Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, in Abbottstown. She was also previously an active member of the Marion Oxfordites, an over 50 group from New Oxford, alongside her husband, Slim.

Mary is survived by four daughters, Dorothy M. Wolford of Spring Grove, Catherine “Katie” B. Wysocki & husband Joseph of Dover, Susanna C. Beatty and husband Charles of Mesa, AZ, and Mary Francis Carbaugh of Hanover; a son, Demetrius C. Carbaugh and wife Heather of Gettysburg; as well as six grandchildren and ten great-grandchildren. Mary was preceded in death by her five brothers, Joseph, John, Frank (Butch), and Thomas Menchyk, and Michael Steele, and her son-in-law, David F. Wolford.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated for Mary at 11 AM, Tuesday, March 10, 2026, at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church, 6084 W Canal Rd, Abbottstown, PA 17301, with Monsignor Robert Lawrence officiating as celebrant. Burial will be directly following the Mass in Immaculate Conception Cemetery, New Oxford. A viewing and time to share memories with the family will be from 6-8 PM, at Feiser Funeral & Cremation Care, Inc., 302 Lincoln Way W, New Oxford, PA 17350, with prayers at 7:30 PM.
