Larry Eugene Hughes, an adored father, grandfather, great-grandfather, brother, and friend, peacefully departed this life on Tuesday, September 22, 2026, at the age of 80.
Larry was born on August 25, 1946, in Hanover, Pennsylvania, to the late David and Pansy Ethel (Green) Hughes-Roop.

He proudly served his country in the United States Marine Corps. Following his military service, he found his professional calling in car sales and became the owner of The Car Lot in Hanover, PA. Larry later established Triple L Farms in New Oxford, where he bred and raised award-winning Simmental cattle. A respected member of the Simmental community, Larry was proud of his cattle and enjoyed every opportunity to share his knowledge with fellow and future farmers.

Larry also bred and raised German Shorthaired Pointers that competed in field trials. An outdoorsman at heart, he found great joy in gardening, hunting, and fishing. He was also an avid Washington Redskins fan.

He was also a member of the New Oxford Social Club and the McSherrystown Home Association. Above all, Larry treasured his family. His three sons held a special place in his heart, and he took great pride in his grandchildren and their lives. His endless generosity, support, and knack for telling (and retelling) stories created memories that will be cherished for generations to come.

Larry leaves behind a loving family who will carry his memory forward: his three sons, Leland Hughes (Angie) of New Oxford; Dr. Lance Hughes (Amy) of Hobson, Montana; and Laramie Hughes (Sharon Bryan) of New Oxford; his seven grandchildren, Maggie and Ella Hughes, both of New Oxford, Pennsylvania; Dr. Colten Hughes (Dr. Karissa) of Las Vegas, Nevada; River Hughes (Bailey) of Hobson, Montana; Devyn Hughes of Bozeman, Montana; Cheyenne Hughes (Luke Scholz) of Denver, Colorado; and Dalton Hughes of Camden, Illinois; his four great-grandchildren, Ridge, Weston, Harlow, and Rhodes Hughes; as well as his sister, Betty Jo Gastley and many nieces and nephews. He is also survived by his cherished friend Mary Messer, her daughter Sarah, Tristan Walton, Rory “Paps best pal” Walton, and his loyal German Shepherd, Champ.

In addition to his parents and step-father, Charles Roop, Larry was preceded in death by his siblings, Anna Schuler, Daisy Kump, Carroll Hughes, Samuel Hughes, and Leland Hughes.
Larry lived a life rooted in family and the many passions that brought him joy. His legacy will live on through the family he loved so deeply.

A private celebration of Larry’s life will be held at a later date with family and close friends.
