Harriet C. Smaine

Harriet C. Smaine, 88, passed away peacefully on Friday, March 3, 2017 at the Brethren Home in New Oxford from complications following emergency heart surgery at Hershey Medical Center. Born on March 14, 1928, she was the daughter of the late Margaret (Ulrich) and Raphael H. Smith. She was the loving wife of Henry Smaine, who predeceased her on September 14, 1998.
Harriet was a member of Immaculate Conception Church in New Oxford. She graduated from Delone Catholic High School in 1946 and entered St. Joseph's School of Nursing in Lancaster, graduating in 1949 as a registered nurse. She had been employed at York Memorial Hospital.
Harriet enjoyed visiting with her family and friends, especially spending time with her devoted caretaker, Jody Jacoby.
Harriet is survived by four children, John Smaine and Andrea, of Boulder, CO, James Smaine of Denver, CO, Maggie Kennedy and her husband, James of Ft. Lauderdale, FL, and William Smaine of Lake Tahoe, CA; five grandsons, Peter Kennedy, Thomas Kennedy, Kyle Smaine, Justin Smaine, and Clay Smaine; two great-grandsons, Peter Kennedy and Zamari Kennedy; and a half-sister, Beverly A. Smith of New Oxford. She was predeceased by three siblings, Leah Sieg, Richard U. Smith and Mary Frances Gardner.
A memorial service will be held on Friday, March 17, 2017 at 6:30 p.m. at the Nicarry Meeting House of The Brethren Home Community, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Delone Catholic High School, 140 S. Oxford Ave, McSherrystown, PA 17344.
