George R. Alwine

George R. Alwine, 94, died Thursday, December 1, 2016, at Hanover Hospital. He was the husband of Imogene D. "Cookie" (Roberts) Alwine, his wife of 72 years.
George was born July 31, 1922 in Abbottstown, the son of the late Mark H. and Cora M. (Freed) Alwine.
George was a member of St. John's Lutheran Church in Abbottstown, and served in the U.S. Army during WWII. He was a member of the State, Local and National Rural Letter Carriers Associations, United Hook & Ladder #33, and a he was a life member of the East Berlin V.F.W..
In addition to his wife Cookie, George is survived by five sons, Glade K. Alwine and his wife, Victoria of Gettysburg, Terry R. Alwine and his wife, Jane of Hanover, Denny G. Alwine of Abbottstown, Scott E. Alwine and his wife, Susan of Abbottstown, and Jerry L. Alwine of Austin, ten grandchildren; and 24 great-grandchildren. He was predeceased by a daughter, Sharon L. Byers; and a daughter-in-law, Pamela A. Alwine..
Funeral services will be held on Monday, December 5, 2016 at 11 a.m. at St. John's Lutheran Church, 100 E. Water St, Abbottstown, with his pastor, Rev. Shawn Berkebile officiating. Burial will be in the church cemetery. A viewing will be held at the church on Monday from 10 a.m. until the time of the service.
