Obituary

Evelyn Stambaugh Mechtly, 94, passed away Saturday, November 9, 2024, at The Brethren Home Community in New Oxford.

Born December 1, 1929, in Oxford Township to Oscar and Florence (Study) Stambaugh, Evelyn attended Red Hill School in Oxford Township and New Oxford High School, graduating in 1947.  In 1951, she graduated from the University of Pennsylvania School of Nursing.

Evelyn worked as a night nurse in hospitals in Poughkeepsie and Newburgh, NY, until her marriage to Lt. Ivan R. Mechtly, Jr, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Oxford on June 7, 1952.  As an Army wife, she shared tours with her husband including three years in Germany, and assignments in Virginia, Maryland, Texas, Utah and New York.  Upon Ivan's retirement from the U.S. Army, they moved to Gettysburg.  After Ivan became a pastor, she lived in Adams, Columbia, Northampton and Schuylkill counties and took trips to Mexico and Israel.  Their 29th home was a cottage at Cross Keys Village, The Brethren Home Community in New Oxford since 1998.

Evelyn is survived by her husband of 72 years, Rev. Ivan R. Mechtly, Jr, New Oxford, four children: Diane Himmel (Mark), Cedar Creek, TX; David Mechtly (Maggie) MAJ, U.S. Army, Ret., Colorado Springs, CO; Dr. Bruce Mechtly (Ann Stewart) PhD, Topeka, KS; and Bryan Mechtly (MaryAnn Mullen), Red Hook, NY; eight grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, her brother, Homer Stambaugh of Glenville; and many nieces and nephews.  She was predeceased by her parents and two brothers: Ralph and Glenn Stambaugh.

In accordance with Evelyn's wishes, her body will be donated to medical science.  A service to celebrate Evelyn's life will be held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at 2 PM, at The Nicarry Meeting House of The Brethren Home Community, 2990 Carlisle Pike, New Oxford, with Rev. Joel Hummel officiating.  The family will receive friends at Nicarry on Thursday from 1:30 PM until the time of the service.  Feiser Funeral Home, Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, is in charge of arrangements.  Memories may be shared at www.feiserfuneralhome.com.
