Myers

Obituary

Eugene R. "Gene" Myers, 82, went home to be with the Lord on January 12, 2025, at The Brethren Home Community after a long and courageous battle with cancer. He was the husband of Ruth E. (Leister) Myers, his wife of 58 years.

Gene was born on March 6, 1942, in Hanover, the son of Raymond and Roberta (Masemer) Myers. He graduated from Eichelberger High School in 1960, where he cultivated a love of music that would endure throughout his lifetime. As a member of his high school band, he played the baritone horn and marched in the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade. Gene pursued a degree in secondary education while singing on the concert choir at Shippensburg University, Class of 1964, where he met his wife, Ruth. Audiences enjoyed hearing his warm, baritone voice singing with various church choirs, The Hanover Barbershop Quartet, and The Carroll Singers.

Dedication to church work, teaching and sharing the Gospel formed Gene's life purpose. Service to others for Gene meant showing up early and paying attention to details. He served in many leadership capacities:  council president; certified Methodist lay speaker, adult Sunday School teacher, and Bible School director. He was an active member of the Deer Park Lion's Club in Carroll County, MD. Gene's smiling eyes would light up the church hall as he cooked breakfast for church festivals and Lion's Club events.

In addition to his wife, Ruth, Gene is survived by two daughters; Robin Jo Adamopoulos and her husband, Alex of Berlin, MD and Rachel J. Myers-Potts and her husband, Eric of Mt. Airy, MD; daughter-in-law, Gwen (Friday) Myers of Chestertown, MD; long-time friend and adopted daughter, Ruth Ann Horner, and six grandchildren: Elise, Kara, TJ, Yana, Lydia, and Josiah, and a great-granddaughter, Scarlett. He was predeceased by a son, Chadly-Jay Leister Myers and great-granddaughter, Zoya Myers.
