Obituary

Arthur L. Stabler, Sr, 92, of Abbottstown, died Sunday, December 17, 2017, at Hanover Hospital.  He was the husband of Helen (Hudson) Stabler, his wife of 64 years.

Art was born April 4, 1925, in Wilmington, DE, the son of the late Nicholas S. and Eleanor F. (Ely) Stabler.  He grew up on a farm in Chadds Ford, met his wife in Richmond, VA, married in 1953, moved to York where all five of his children were born, and then, moved to their farm outside Abbottstown in 1962 where he enjoyed gardening.  He was a quiet person who led by example and lived by his morals and values.

Art was a member of Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, where he was an elder, deacon, trustee and Sunday School Superintendent.  He served in the U.S. Army during WWII in Europe following the Battle of the Bulge, and received two purple hearts.  He graduated from University of Pennsylvania on the GI Bill, and became an architect, working for the National Park Service initially, and also worked on Memorial Stadium in Baltimore, MD.  He was the owner of A.L. Stabler & Associates Architects, for 26 years, and did numerous commercial, educational and institutional projects, including projects in the New Oxford, Fairfield, Bermudian, Hanover and Southwest school districts, Hanover Public Library, Hanover Fire Department, The Brethren Home and many more.  He developed the Square Commercial Center Office Complex in Hanover, and was a former president of Downtown Hanover, Inc.  He was a member of the Rotary Club of Hanover, where he had 53 years of perfect attendance, and the Paul Harris Society.  Art coached baseball for 33 years in the New Oxford Junior Baseball League, where he was also a former president, and had a baseball field named for him.  He participated in a Lend-A-Hand Disaster Relief Mission Trip, Adams County Literary Council, and he was the Hamilton Township Zoning Officer.  He was a former New Oxford Chamber of Commerce Person of The Year, Boy Scouts of America scoutmaster for Abbottstown Troop #127 for 12 years, National Jamboree Scoutmaster five times, and was awarded the Boy Scouts of America Silver Beaver Award.

In addition to his wife Helen, Art is survived by his children, Jon R. Stabler and his wife Deborah of Boerne, TX, David W. Stabler and his wife Tracy of York, A. Lea Stabler, Jr, of Merrimack, NH, Rebecca A. Stabler of Abbottstown, and Donald L. Stabler of Abbottstown, seven grandchildren, Collin and his wife Suzanne, Anna, Brian and his wife Breanna, Lynne, Graham, Daelyn, and Shaely, two great grandchildren, Scarlett and Johannes, and two brothers, Robert Stabler of San Gabriel, CA, and David Stabler of Kennett Square.  He was predeceased by a brother, N. Snowden Stabler, Jr and a sister, Flora S. Conger.

A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, December 27, 2017 at 11 AM, at Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, 208 Baltimore St, Gettysburg with Rev. Lou Nyiri officiating.  Burial will be private.  A viewing will be held at the Feiser Funeral Home, Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford, on Tuesday from 6-8 PM.  Memorial contributions may be made to Gettysburg Presbyterian Church, or to Rotary Foundation, C/O Rotary Club of Hanover, PO Box 18, Hanover, PA  17331.  Memories may be shared at www.feiserfuneralhome.com.
