Obituary

Andrew C. "Bud" Verchimak, 81, of Lake Meade, East Berlin, Pennsylvania, passed away peacefully on October 27, 2025, surrounded by his loving family.

Bud was the son of the late Andrew and Ruth Verchimak. He is survived by his devoted wife of 26 years, Carol Verchimak, and was preceded in death by his first wife, Nancy Verchimak.

Family was central to Bud's life. Bud was a proud father to Charlene Shaffer (husband Mike), Denise Verchimak (husband Lee McDonnell), and step-daughter Jennifer Wassermann (husband Jeremy). He was a beloved grandfather to Amanda Hudson, Branden Shaffer, Adam Demmel, Al McDonnell, Carli McDonnell, Josh Deitchman, and Elizabeth Perrot, and a cherished great-grandfather to Teddy Hudson, Charlie Hudson, Emery Shaffer, Abby Deitchman, and Jacob Deitchman. Bud is also survived by his sister Joy Spangler (husband Herman Spangler), and was preceded in death by his brothers Barry Verchimak and Richard Verchimak.

Born on June 15, 1944, in a farmhouse in Dorrance Township, Wapwallopen, Pennsylvania, Bud's formative years were shaped by the era of World War II, where his father served overseas in France and Belgium while he and his mother lived with his grandparents.

He excelled academically and attended school in a two-room schoolhouse. He graduated from Newport Township High School in 1962. He was also a devoted attendee of church and Sunday school every week. His love for nature and animals was evident in the time he spent on the farm.

Bud began his career at Consolidated Cigar Corp., rising from stock clerk to foreman in two years. He found his calling as Director of Operations in the restaurant industry, most notably the Amity House and Perkins Family restaurants, where his strong work ethic and leadership impacted many and he supervised as many as 1,000 employees.

An avid athlete, Bud played on local baseball teams, often making All-Star teams and participating in church softball leagues. Bud was a dedicated runner and in later years, continued his love of fitness by walking three to five miles a day on his treadmill. His remarkable recovery from a massive heart attack in 2014 stood as a testament to his strength and determination.

Upon retirement in 2006, Bud and Carol embraced adventure, traveling together on 30 cruises and enjoying numerous beach resorts and trips throughout Florida and other states. He enjoyed spending time with family, attending minor league baseball games, and watching horse races. A lifelong sports fan, he enjoyed cheering for the Yankees, Phillies, Eagles, Celtics, and the Bulls during the Jordan era.

A private celebration of life will be held by his family. Bud wrote: "I'd like the memory of me to be a happy one. I'd like to leave an echo of happy times and laughing times and bright and sunny days". His memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him well.

The family extends their deepest gratitude to the dedicated medical and hospice workers who helped to care for Bud in his final months. Memorial donations may be made to Hospice and Community Care, 235 Saint Charles Way, Suite 250, York, PA 17402.
