William Millar Obituary

William W. Millar, 93, died Wednesday, October 24, 2018, at Homewood at Plum Creek, surrounded by his loving family.  He was the husband of Patricia C. (Breighner) Millar, his wife of 67 years.

Bill was born November 16, 1924, in Straban Twp., the son of the late Peter J. and Beulah N. (Boose) Millar.

Bill was a member of First Evangelical Lutheran Church in New Oxford, and served in the U.S. Navy during WWII, serving in the European Theater of Operations.  He was a graduate of New Oxford High School and Gettysburg College.  Bill was a history teacher in the New Oxford School district, before becoming the district’s first guidance counselor, and he was instrumental in obtaining paid health insurance for the New Oxford teachers, with many district following suit.  He was a member of PASR, Adams Co. PSAR, where he was a former president, NEA, PSEA, where he was a former local chapter president, American Legion, V.F.W., AMVETS, USS Kasaan Bay Association, Friends of Gettysburg, Gettysburg Foundation, PASR legislative committee, and he served on the board of the Adams Co. Office For Aging.  Bill was a charter member of the Friends of the National World War II Memorial in Washington, DC, the National WWII Museum in New Orleans, Adams County Guidance Counselors Association, and New Oxford Investment Club, and was a member of the historical societies in Adams Co., New Oxford, Hanover and Gettysburg.  Bill was a collector and loved history and research, often sharing his findings through talks.  He was a well-known local historian on topics such as one room schoolhouses, the canal system, train systems, Civil War, coins and paper script.

In addition to his wife Pat, Bill is survived by his children, Lyne C. Aurand and her husband Daryl of Gettysburg, Kim K. Millar and his wife Cathy of Durham, NC, Leslie L. Longo and her husband Barry of Harrisburg, Kit K. Curlen and her husband Robert of Hanover, Kent K. Millar and his wife Yoko of Oakview, CA, and Lance L. Millar and his wife Lori of Hummelstown, 13 grandchildren, seven great grandchildren, and three brothers, Fred Millar of CA, James Millar of Hanover, and Joel Millar of Mechanicsburg.  He was predeceased by a son, Brent M. Millar.

Funeral services will be held on Thursday, November 1, 2018 at 10 AM, at First Evangelical Lutheran Church, 200 Lincoln Way East, New Oxford, with his pastor, Rev. Elizabeth George officiating.  Burial will be in New Oxford Cemetery.  A viewing will be held on Wednesday, from 6-8 PM at the Feiser Funeral Home, Inc, 302 Lincoln Way West, New Oxford.  In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to the New Oxford Historical Society, PO Box 353, New Oxford, PA  17350.  Memories may be shared at www.feiserfuneralhome.com.
